Thursday nights at Bushido Martial Arts in Stockport are a cornerstone of our weekly training schedule—offering structured, focused, and high-quality instruction in our two core disciplines: Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Freestyle Karate.

📍 Location: Bushido Martial Arts, Bridgehall Community Centre, Stockport, SK3 8NR

Led by Chief Instructor Paul Powell, who opens the dojo before class and locks up after the final bow, Thursday sessions offer students two solid hours of traditional and modern martial arts—delivered with expertise, energy, and care.

🕕 18:00 – Warm-Up & Conditioning

We begin every Thursday session with a 20–30 minute warm-up that combines movement, coordination, and strength work. This is more than just a stretch—it’s a carefully designed part of training that builds fitness, prevents injury, and helps students sharpen their focus before the main session begins.

Expect mobility drills, cardio bursts, and partner-based warm-ups that set the tone for the evening.

🥋 18:30 – Core Martial Arts: Jiu-Jitsu & Freestyle Karate

After warm-up, we move straight into two parallel disciplines that define the Bushido curriculum:

  • Japanese Jiu-Jitsu: Focused on practical self-defence, throws, joint locks, takedowns, and control-based techniques. Students learn how to neutralise an opponent using leverage and precision rather than force. [Click here to learn more about our Jiu-Jitsu class]

  • Freestyle Karate: A dynamic striking system that blends traditional techniques with modern footwork, timing, and combination drills. It’s fast-paced, fun, and ideal for developing both coordination and confidence. [Click here to learn more about our Freestyle Karate class]

These classes are run side by side and cater to students of all ages and experience levels. Beginners are supported, and more advanced students are continuously challenged.

The rest of the session is dedicated to developing skill, discipline, and self-defence capability in a structured and supportive environment.

🕗 20:00 – Class Ends

The session concludes at 20:00 with students having completed two hours of high-quality martial arts training. Whether you're preparing for your next grading, building confidence, or simply staying active, Thursday nights at Bushido Martial Arts are a fantastic part of your martial arts journey.

Under the guidance of Chief Instructor Paul Powell, the class is well-organised, professionally delivered, and rooted in the values of respect, focus, and effort.
