If you're serious about martial arts or want the most complete training experience we offer, Saturday at Bushido Martial Arts in Bridgehall Community Centre, Stockport, is the day to show up, train hard, and take your skills to the next level.
This is our longest and most varied session of the week. Led by Chief Instructor Paul Powell, Saturdays combine physical conditioning, our core martial arts disciplines, and optional specialist classes — all designed to help you build strength, confidence, and technical ability in a welcoming and disciplined environment.
🕧 12:30 – Dojo Opens & Warm-Up Begins
The doors open at 12:30pm at Bridgehall Community Centre, Stockport, where Paul Powell welcomes students and prepares the dojo for a full afternoon of training.
We start with a 20–30 minute full-body warm-up — not just a stretch, but a challenging mix of:
Bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and sit-ups
Dynamic mobility and movement drills
A focused 10-minute run to fire up your cardio and sharpen your mental focus
This warm-up builds the foundation for everything that follows, improving strength, stamina, and discipline.
🥋 13:00 – Core Martial Arts: Freestyle Karate & Japanese Jiu-Jitsu
At 1:00pm, we move into the heart of our Bushido training system:
Freestyle Karate – a mostly non-contact striking art focused on movement, combinations, and control.
Japanese Jiu-Jitsu – full-contact self-defence training covering throws, joint locks, strangle escapes, and real-world applications.
These disciplines run side by side, allowing students to develop both striking and grappling skills in a structured, progressive environment. Training continues until 2:30pm, with technical practice, partner drills, and belt-level progression built into every session.
🥪 14:30 – Lunch Break & Community Time
At 2:30pm, we pause for a well-earned lunch break. Students usually bring a packed lunch or light snack, and we eat together as a group. This downtime is about more than just refuelling — it’s a chance to build friendships, strengthen the dojo community, and
recharge before the second half of the day.
🥊 15:00 – Specialist Training Sessions
From 3:00pm, students can choose from a range of focused, specialist sessions tailored to their goals and skill level:
Kickboxing (Pads or Sparring) – sharpen your striking, power, and timing
Weapons Kata Class – master traditional weapons and precise techniques
Black Belt Class – advanced content, grading preparation, and leadership training
Extra Karate or Jiu-Jitsu Time – for students who want to keep honing their core skills
This part of the day is all about customising your training. Whether you want to deepen your technique or try something new, there’s a specialist session to help you progress.
🕟 16:30 – Close of Session
We finish the Saturday session at 4:30pm, marking the end of our most comprehensive training day. Students leave the dojo feeling accomplished, energised, and a step closer to achieving their martial arts goals.
Why We Recommend Staying for the Full Day
Our Saturday session is designed as a complete martial arts experience, and we strongly recommend staying for the full four hours (12:30pm to 4:30pm) if you’re serious about progression. Here’s why:
✅ You’ll build strength and conditioning from the ground up
✅ You’ll get extended time in both Freestyle Karate and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu
