Bushido on the Move: Training with Martial Arts Legend Cynthia Rothrock
Bushido spread its wings once again this weekend as Senseis Atticus, Chris, and Owen journeyed to Barnsley to attend a very special seminar hosted by Sensei Darrel Bedford at Modern Martial Arts. The highlight of the event? A unique opportunity to train with none other than martial arts legend Cynthia Rothrock!
By all accounts, the seminar was an inspiring and challenging experience. Our team returned full of new techniques, tougher exercises, and plenty of motivation to bring back to the dojo—so everyone, be prepared!
A Focus on Functional Strength and Breath work
The seminar centered around bodyweight training and an intriguing technique known as Tension Breathing, a method famously used by Bruce Lee, who was known for avoiding traditional weight training. Rothrock shared her approach to this method, combining elements of Tai Chi with focused breath control.
One exercise had participants holding the demanding Iron Horse Stance while practising slow, deep inhalations and exhalations. Later, the breathing evolved into quick inhales followed by long, controlled exhales through a “snake breath” technique—“SSSSSSSSSS”—while keeping the muscles fully tensed. The practice was both physically intense and mentally centring, combining strength, flexibility, and breath awareness.
Brutal Cooldowns and Lasting Lessons
The session concluded with what could only be described as a gruelling cooldown—intensive lower body work targeting hip strength and flexibility, essential attributes for any martial artist.
All in all, it was a phenomenal day of learning, growth, and connection. A huge thank you to Sensei Darrel Bedford for the warm welcome and for organising such a valuable experience. We’re excited to share what we’ve learned back at Bushido—and yes, we’ll be putting you all through your paces soon!
Stay strong. Train harder.
