One of the most common questions we are asked by parents is about age. At Bushido Martial Arts, the minimum age to begin training in freestyle karate is 5 years old.

This article explains why that minimum age exists and how grading works, so expectations are clear from the start.

Why the Minimum Age Is Set at 5 Years Old

The minimum age for freestyle karate at Bushido Martial Arts is set at five for safety reasons.

Freestyle karate involves structured movement, partner work, and learning how to control the body safely. From our experience, children under five often find it difficult to train safely in this environment.

At around age five, most children are able to:

  • Understand and follow safety instructions

  • Control their movements around others

  • Work safely with partners

  • Focus long enough to complete a class

Setting a clear minimum age helps us keep classes safe, structured, and enjoyable for everyone on the mat.

The Grading Standard Is the Same for All Students

At Bushido Martial Arts, the grading standard is the same for all students, regardless of age.

Progression is based on training, understanding, and readiness, not on how old a student is.

This ensures grading remains fair, meaningful, and consistent across the club. To learn more about the grading expectations, you can read more by clicking here.

Training Time Required to Be Nominated for Grading

To be nominated for grading in freestyle karate at Bushido Martial Arts, students must complete a minimum of 48 hours of training within a grading period.

This requirement applies equally to all students. Regular training ensures students are physically and mentally prepared before being considered for their next grade.

Grading Is by Nomination

Grading is by nomination rather than automatic progression. Completing the required training time is essential, but students must also demonstrate appropriate technique, focus, and behaviour in class before being nominated. This approach supports safe progression and long-term development.

Is Freestyle Karate right for Your Child?

Freestyle karate can be suitable from age five if a child is comfortable in a structured training environment and able to follow safety instructions.
